What instruments make up a String Quartet?

A String Quartet consists of 2 Violins, 1 Viola and 1 Cello. Our arrangements are specifically for this combination. In our experience a trio does not really work as it sounds as though a player is missing, and the sound is not as lush or cohesive.

What does your standard fee cover?

Our fees are based on the quartet being 2-3 hours on site. More than a 3 hour call will mean an extra fee on top of the standard fee (and is charged by the hour).

Do I need to book a long time in advance?

If you want a confirmed booking then usually 6-12 months in advance will be fine. But if the musicians are free then a last minute booking is sometimes possible so it is always worth asking.

What happens if one of the musicians is ill or indisposed on the day?

Masquerade prides itself on having some of the finest musicians in the country at its disposal and in the unlikely event that a main member is ill on the day then we have a small group of deputies who all know and have played the music many times, thus ensuring that the high professional standards are always maintained.

Can i have a piece of music specially arranged for my event?

Of course! Given a couple of months notice this is absolutely fine. Arranging for quartet is a highly skilled and time consuming job; we always endeavour to make the finished product as close to the original sound as possible. Therefore there is an extra charge for this service.

Are you able to play outdoors?

All of Masquerade's players own valuable antique instruments and therefore are not keen to expose them to rain or hot sunshine. If you wish us to play outside you will need to organise a shaded area such as a gazebo. If it looks like it is going to rain or is too cold then we will play indoors.

What will we wear?

Usually this will be formal dress such as tails, black or white dinner jacket for the gentlemen and long black or coloured dresses/tops for the ladies. It is entirely up to you. The gentlemen can also wear normal day suits or smart shirt/trousers to create a more informal look.
